The Inside Story

By: Hisham Malaika

In 2008 I spent a year in Oslo working with Snøhetta on the design of the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Cultures as Aramco’s architectural consultant and client representative.

One of the most inspirational and memorable events that occurred on the project was the birth of the steel pipe cladding that wraps around the building as a second skin giving the project its surreal, homogeneous and totally unique look.

Snøhetta’s architectural concept for this building was derived from the desert rocks snd stones; they created a scheme whereby each of the project›s main components (i.e. library, auditorium, Great Hall, Children’s learning center etc.) would be represented by a unique “stone” shape and all brought together in one curvaceous majestic organic composition.

Snøhetta’s competition submittal showed the external cladding of these “stones” covered with a highly polished seamless metal cladding. Despite it being beautiful it was clear that to achieve this seamless look with metal panel cladding pieces would be one of the most challenging – and expensive – aspects of the building.

As the design progressed there was a clear struggle among the Snohetta team to find the right solution to achieve the same look seen in the competition submittal renderings. Time was ticking and as an Aramco client team we were working against a strict tight deadline; consequently we were putting pressure on Snøhetta to deliver on their promises. It was essential we reach a solution with the next 2-3 days if we didn’t want the project schedule to slip. 2 days later Snøhetta presented to us an array of reasonable cladding solutions however none of which captured the essence of the competition drawings; nevertheless practicality and time management dictated that we settle for the best compromise available. We selected one solution however all of us felt that the magic of the original vision would be lost but we had to come to terms with this reality. The solution compromised to some degree the seamlessness of the organic curves of the “stones

Kjetil Thorssen – founder of Snøhetta – was watching the developments on the cladding but wasn’t satisfied with the solution his team had come up with even though we as a client had accepted it. I will never forget the meeting the next day when Kjetil tried convincing his own team to continue searching for a better solution but was met with angry resistance and was accused by his own team of “time wasting.” Kjetil dealt with his junior staff courteously and retreated diplomatically. Then early next morning Kjetil came to my office excited and delighted. He was like a little child carrying with him a medium sized piece of stone and a roll of string. He sat opposite me and started showing me how the string could wrap around the stone in one seamless motion. The end result of a stone wrapped in string highlighted perfectly every curve and turn of the organic stone.

If you ever get to see the King Abdulaziz Centre for World Cultures you›ll notice the building is enveloped in steel pipes which highlight beautifully the curvature of the organic shapes of the building. This incredible and ingenious solution was the result of a creative yet stubborn architect who refused to give up and refused to compromiseI the vision of his architecture.

As an architect I will always remember the many poignant lessons inherent in the making of this building which I was privileged enough to be a part of.
